It's nature's way of protecting the vulnerable obits editors. If they didn't die in alphabetical order there'd be feuds among the living as to who's name should be printed first.

I heard that joke for the first time about 1970. It was along the lines of "Another big upset in the paper today -- everyone died in alphabetical order."

this one is so easy
it is just the way everything else is done, you go alphabetically from the time you are born until you die
it is orderly and there are no surprises that way

So what if a guy named 'Zeke' died? Would the alphabet start over again?

It doesn't work that way in my local paper - - they put them by the length of the obit. I can never just look in the S's for myself before I get myself dressed for work!

DUH! The newspapers put the obituaries in alphabetical order so that it's easier to find one if you're looking for a certain person.
