ALL ANSWERS SO FAR ARE INCORRECT!!!

In the formula y = mx+b, b is the Y-INTERCEPT not the X-intercept!!!!!!

the x intercept is where the graph crosses the x-axis; or the point where x=0. So given the x-intercept is 5, the y value for this point is 0, thus giving you the point (5,0)
You now have a point to use to determine the equation of the line.

so, first plug in the slope
y=3x+b
now, plug in the coordinates for the point that you are given
0 = 3(5)+b
now solve for b
0 = 15+b
-15 = b
You now have an equation: y=3x-15

Hope you can understand my explaination and why the others were incorrect.

Hope this helps you understand - good luck - M

The intercept is the B
The slope is m

So your formula would read-

y=3x+5

y = 3x + b
0 = 3(5) + b
b = - 15
y = 3x - 15 gives an x-intercept of 5

If the y-intercept is 5, then the 5 simply goes where b is.
y = 3x + 5
