I didn't get an improper fraction I got -3/4

How would you get -5/4 if -4+1= -3?

Forget the - ve sign to start off:-
1¼ = 5/4 (from 4x1 + 1)
So
- 1¼ = - 5 / 4

Note 1¼ is :
4 quarters + 1 quarter
5 quarters
5/4

If you wanted to make -11/4 a mixed number, it would be -2 and 3/4.

multiply the 4 by the whole number one then add the numerator to it. Negative times a positive = a negative
