if you're going to do it that way just wipe off as much of the old grease as you can and re grease it if you try to clean it out you may push dirt into it if you do get it cleaned out you wont get the grease to the inside part either way your joint may fail

funny thing is most mechanics can pull the axle clean it put on a new boot and reinstall it in less than 45 minuets most cars i have done both sides of a Honda in 45 minuets

You sure can - to get you by for a short time. You should only use CV joint grease since it is very thick and will stay in the joint better. The needle contains a grease zert and needs to be secured with some good tape so is does not pop off due to the thick grease. Squeeze the gun slowly. If the joint is lacking grease then there is a crack in the boot and the grease is leaking out. If the tear or crack is very big then you are doomed to a new boot and maybe a new 1/2 axle. Just smear a very small dab of grease on the hole after wards and it will keep the dirt and water out for quite a while.

as long as you don't get a lot of the brake cleaner on the rubber boot of the CV joint, you can clean it with brake kleen or a parts cleaner, it will evaporate and leave no residue.
next. be sure and ONLY use CV joint grease, it is special grease for constant velocity joints. and after packing be sure and put the clamps on the boot to keep all that nice grease in there.
hope this helps GOOD LUCK

Yes you can,you can get a pack of cv joint grease at professional part stores, depending on how much grease is inside it will take a little or alot of cleaning, then re clamp the boot

this is just my 0.2 cents once the boot has come off and dirt has gotten in to the CV joints it basically tears them apart may cause problems later down the road i highly recommend replacing the whole CV axle if you have an autozone near you .you can go on line and look up the price www.autozone.com but usually around 95.00 and next month replace the other side i hope this helps but i just don't even recommend cleaning the joint and repacking it sorry i have seen it cause allot of problems...

i wouldn't recommend brake cleaner instead use a penetrating oil , then dry it off as much as possible, and when you apply grease do not over apply it takes very little
