Absolutely! With all the dangers in the world, it is a good way to maintain communication with parents/police in the event of an emergency. However, I think strict enforcement of usage during school hours is a must!!! Good luck on your paper.

I'd say yes, but only after a certain age when students learn responsibility. Generally speaking, this is when one first goes into high school.

The reason behind my thinking?

At a certain age, people USUALLY develop common sense and know what's right and what's wrong (not texting during class, no sending answers during the test, no mosquito ring tones that annoy everyone who can hear it, etc.)

Therefore, these people should be given phones in case of an emergency or when in need. My high school serves over 2000 students, but theres only about 5 phones in the office open to student use. Plus, with everything going on in high school and in college (EC's, sudden schedule changes, etc), you have to be able to notify your parents/guardians when something comes up that you cannot miss, or you have to change something in your daily schedule.

Before that age, however, the cell phone is no longer a tool, but rather an accessory. I can't tell you how many adolescents/children flaunt their cell phones and make calls to each other, even though they're in the same location. Also, I've seen teachers driven crazy by those who use cell phones to cheat on tests, and this was a major problem back in my jr. high school.

Personally, I don't think anyone, other than business managers or those who need to stay in constant contact 24/7, should have those fancy phones (iPhone, RAZR, etc.)

The purpose of a cell phone is to call someone when the need arises. And honestly, I'm perfectly fine with my phone. Can it go on Youtube and look up videos? Nope. Can it call someone? Yep, and thats all I need in a cell phone.

I hope that helps your report. :)

Not in class because it could be a distraction. School is for learning and time on task is important.

However if parent/s sign a permission form documenting a valid need for a cell phone (getting ride home etc...) the school may choose to enlist a volunteer cadre from PTO, or other appropriate group, to handle the work involved . This would include checking applications from parents, and being at school twice a day to sign in and out the phones which would be held for the student involved during class time.

I'd say yes and no, because there are a lot of things to consider, on the up side of having your cellphones students are able to contact parents faster if there is an emergency at school, on the down side yes students can use them during tests to cheat and teachers find it annoying when a phone goes off during class, also it's possible for students to get their phones stolen from lockers and backpacks so the school could get many complaints from parents.

As a parent i wanted my kids to have phones in case of an emergency. I understand that a million phones going off in the class room is just disruptive but no school that i have been to has a payphone without leaving the premises.
Payphones could be installed, used during recess, lunch and after school. It would also get around the issue of cell phones in schools.
Fundraising could go to emergency calls for those kids with no money instead of crap things like new turf.

For safety purposes, yeah I think they should. Look at the students that have been able to call 911 for help during school emergencies. Also the ones that need to get picked up late from an empty parking lot after an event and their parents forget. What would really make sense is if the school only allowed certain models of cell phones without features like texting. Just a simple call, talk, and store phone numbers cell phone. I think that would be fair.

In my opinion no cell phones should not be allowed in school. For one it is a major distraction. Nowadays, students already dont wanna be in a classroom, imagine what will happen, texting each other while the teacher trying to teach.Although, it is a great inventory, like if a family member has an emergency it makes it easy to get a hold of you, but, is it really worth the drama of cell phones in junior hih and high school, think about this, students are taking picture of other students and posting negative rumors about students on my space with the help of cell phones already.Plus it' s hard enough for teachers to get their student attentin without the help of cell phones.

Yes, I think that they should be allowed in school, as long as they are used respectfully. This means that they are off or on silent while in class. If you are caught using it in class, then the teacher may take it away (obviously to be returned later or have the parents pick it up).

People are going to find ways to cheat no matter what. They've been doing it for years. Take away the phones, and they'll just figure out something else.

As for being a distraction, there are tons of distractions in a classroom besides a cell phone. Friends, iPods, magazines or books, that hot guy/girl in front of you... there's plenty. You have to learn how to ignore the distractions instead of just ban them completely.

I have a cell phone that I bring to school, myself. I realize that they should not be used in class, so I turn it off. It remains in my bag with me, but I do not use it. Not all teens with phones use them in class.

If there are consequences to their use at inappropriate times, I'm sure students would learn quickly to turn them off.

When teaching I just required students to have their cell phones off in class. It is understandable for students to own cell phones to contact their friends and family before and after school, but they are also very disruptive.

In Japan it is very rude to talk on the phone on a train or other public transportation. In general people should always be considerate with their cell phone use, be it in school or anywhere else in public.

Bring them to school? Yes, but have them off while in class. They have proved quite helpful when schools are under attack by armed individuals, so for safety (even under less dangerous circumstances than that), they should be allowed. I hope there is some kind of detector, or soon will be, to prevent text messaging during class or during an examination. Obviously, oral use would be detected in the ordinary way, but texting with the device on the knee could lead to a lot of cheating.
