My son is 6 weeks old and was born at 36 weeks and only weighed 3lbs 6oz because of problems with the placenta--he was only small and had no other problems, but was in the ICU for 2 weeks to gain weight. He now weighs almost 7lbs. I've been debating how much to take him out and whether I should let friends with children visit because of disease risk. I'm curious how other parents of early or small babies handled this.

I had a preemie.
For the 1st month I asked friends and family to wash with antibacterial soap.
I started taking her out a couple of weeks after we were home.

I've had 2 prems - one at 28 weeks and the other at 33 weeks.
Personally I took both out within the first few weeks of being at home - if your worried about infection etc.. put the pushchair rain cover / car seat cover over so your baby is inside and everyone else is outside.
I always carried a hand sanitiser spray and if people wanted to touch them, I asked them to spray a bit on their hands

Just keep it to friends and family touching your baby for a while - until they have built an immunity up, but infection can get them whenever, even from you!! Dont keep your baby inside too much, they need fresh air too.

I stayed home for about 4 weeks without going out much when I had my daughter. If anyone came over they had to wash their hands first. If someone was sick, I politely asked them to wait until they were better. My daughter was born during flu season and I didn't want my newborn to get the flu. If you go out, bring antibacterial hand gel and have people use it first before picking him up or don't let anyone pick him up at all. Do what feels right to you! Congrats on your new baby.

you could now. its all about personal preference. my son was a 36 weeker too. i took him out at 4 days old although he weighed 5 13. there are even more germs at your doctor's office then anywhere else and im sure you take him there- as long as he has a healthy immune system i wouldnt worry

You can probably take him out now. My daughter was 7 pounds when I started taking her places. She was fine. Just dont let strangers touch her.
