You don't say what subject you are studying. First, I would check with your graduate adviser to see if he/she has any suggestions. Some faculty members keep a file of prospective research projects.
Once you have a topic, research it in databases available through your college library. Check with a reference librarian to see which databases would be best.
After you have done your reading, I'd suggest you divide your topic into 3 or 4 subtopics. It will be easier to approach the writing if you think of the project in sections-- like writing 4 ten to fifteen page papers. Add on an introduction and a summary, and you should be done. Good luck.
