Bears leave hibernation in the SPRING. The pregnant bears go into dens first in the winter and deliver offspring during the hibernation. The mother bears and cubs are the last bears to leave the den in the spring. While the male bears are the last ones to go in the dens and the first ones to leave in the spring.

Bears do hibernate during winter season for 5 to 6 months in a specially built dens like nests with grasses and willows and other prepared in rock caves or under the tree roots. (Black and brown bears are not real hibernators though because they wake up and leave their dens once in a while).

The bears don't eat or drink during hibernation. While sleeping, their body temperatures and heartbeats slow down to decrease calories consumption.

It depends how far north they are. For example, Kodiak bears will head for their dens often in late September and emerge in Late April. Farther south brown bears will enter their dens in October and emerge in early April. I have a video on Kodiak bears as well as a book on my bookshelf on bears. But bears leave hibernation when the vegetation is blooming and growing again, which usually coincides with those months in the Northern Hemisphere. Bears don't retreat to their dens because they will get cold. They go to their dens because vegetation is no longer growing and there is nothing left to eat.

Surprise. Bears do not hibernate. They do become dormant but their metabolic rate does not drop the way it would if they hibernated. If it did, they wouldn't have their cubs in late winter.
