If you like reading non-fiction, about what goes on nowadays - I recommend these two -
1) "Under the Loving Care of the Fatherly Leader"
written by Bradley K. Martin
2) "Rogue Regime"
written by Jasper Becker
These two well-written books give an insight about the North Korean Government.
Fiction?
Try all the books written by Clive Cussler (mystery/adventure/drama type). I would suggest you start the books from the first; some of the story lines tend to follow into subsequent novels.
The hero is Dirk Pitt, with his sidekick Al Giordino. These fiction books by Clive Cussler are well-written.

"Ellen Foster" by Kaye Gibbons is a book I bought because the cover said that Ellen was a "southern version of Holden Caulfield"... it has a great first sentence and kept me reading pretty much all the way through-- it's a short book that was also recommended by Oprah way back when.
"The Once and Future King" by T.H. White is a marvelous book about the Camelot legend, written in sections as Arthur grows up and older, with the first section being "The Sword in the Stone," when young Arthur meets Merlin.
That section alone is very magical. I don't know how old you are... but the book is quite a long one, so if you feel you are getting in over your head-- save it for years to come. It's worth it!
"Anansi Boys" by Neil Gaiman is a sly and suddenly magical book about a young man and his father and then... well, a lot happens, to say the least.
I like the autobiographical book "Teacher Man" by Frank McCourt a lot, about him learning to teach high school English in New York City schools... a tale he tells with all the wit and charm of the Irish storyteller. It's "magical" moments are of a different kind, but I appreciated them just as much.
Hope you find books you like in the many lists you're likely to get--

You could try the Maximum Ride series by James Patterson. Begins with "Maximum Ride: The Angel Experiment." I find them to be entertaining.
Summary:

Also - if you think you'd enjoy murder mysteries - Patterson writes very good murder mystery series as well. Alex Cross and Women's Murder Club.
Or Saturday Night and Sunday Morning by Alan Sillitoe is kind of like an adult version of Catcher in the Rye. I enjoyed both books.

Twilight is awesome! by Stephanie Meyers. It is about a girl who falls in love with a vampire. It's one of top favorites (it's tied with harry potter)
Maximum Ride by James Peterson, about kids who have wings, because they were experimented on.
A Great and Terrible Beauty (i dont remember the author, sorry...) I can't really summarise it, but it is about girls who are exploring magic.
