I think Elsie is adorable, but it is one of those names that people either love or hate. As far as Mercedes, it does sound pretty but it just seems tacky to name a baby after a car. Perhaps it's not necessarily the name that sounds so great with Elise, but the music of it. For example, try out some other 3-syllable names in it's place.
Elsie Maddison
Elsie Savannah
Elsie Mackenzie
Elsie Sonora
Elsie Marilyn
Just play around with something until it sounds as pretty to you as Elsie Mercedes.

I do like Elsie a lot, especially if it is a family name. I would like it best as a nickname for Elise or Elizabeth. Mercedes is ok, but it's not my favorite. The reason for it is not just because it's a car, but I find it doesn't mesh well with Elsie. Elsie is a sweet old fashioned good girl name, and Mercedes is a spanish exotic sultry bad girl name. Unless you really like these two sides of the coin, I wouldn't do it.
If you want to pair Elsie with a name with S sounds, consider:
Elsie Sabrina
Elsie Madison
Elsie Isabelle
Elsie Sophia
Elsie Vanessa
Elsie Sydney
Elsie Alexis
Elsie Susannah
Elsie Cassanda
Elsie Alissa
Take care and Good luck!

Mercedes is a classic, lovely name that references Mary - as in "Our Lady of Mercy." I think it is gorgeous.
Unfortunately many confuse it with the luxury automobile these days. With a handful of people using names like Armani, I suppose it's inevitable. But it does make it a better middle than first name.
As for Elsie, it's a darling name, but I can't help but feel it is more of a nickname than a given name. Elsa Mercedes or Elise Mercedes, with Elsie as a nickname, might be a better choice.
Best wishes.

No, Mercedes is a beautiful name (Rent the movie "The Count of Monte Christo" with Jim Caviezel, trust me)
Elsie is a sweet name but I think I like it better as the middle name. Mercedes is the stronger of the two and kind of takes away from the name Elsie if it's the middle name. But both are perfect. I LOVE YOUR CHOICES!

Elsie should be a short form of Elisabeth. People will probably assume her name is Elisabeth anyway. Elsie Mercedes is a nice name. Elisabeth Mercedes is a bit of a mouthful but I strongly suggest using the full name.

FYI to all the haters of the name Mercedes:
It was actually the car named after a girl named Mercedes. One of the German inventors named the "Mercedes" in honor of his daughter. The Benz part comes from another inventor's last name. So the car brand name is hyphenated Mercedes-Benz.
So don't feel bad for naming her Mercedes, it is a pretty name.
And Elsie is cute too.

I like the name Elsie, but I don't like the sound of Elsie Mercedes. I'm afraid I don't really have an answer to why other than I don't like how it sounds.

Well, I think the name Elsie is cute. For some weird reason though, I think there was a famous cow name Elsie. Like a cartoon character or something? The imagine of a black and white cow comes to mind with the name.
I think people would get over that quickly once they know your little one. Just wanted to tell you that in case you hadn't heard it before.
Ok, I found the reference. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Elsie_the_Cow
