Any ideas? By hide, I mean something like wearing a mask, so no one sees any part of that person's the true self.

They think they are clever. They want to watch life out there without showing their true selves themselves, But others are playing the same game. They are 'hiding', but so is most everybody else.
No - the thing to do is to GO INTO hiding. It is no use not hiding when others are, it's no use being yourself when others aren't. so be yourself by yourself.

People hide behind masks because they want people to think they are strong. Sarcasm, is a common mask, which I use really often. It just kind of makes people think you dont give a crap about the world, you dont give a crap whether you live or die, you dont care what people say about you. In reality, you care so much it makes you sick.Also, some people say that they NEVER CRY, but well, thats impossible. They say it so they can look strong, so they can look like they dont care. What I'm trying to say is that the purpose to wearing a mask is to make people think you dont care. Its not exactly the healthiest way, or the right way, but people do it anyway. . . just because they hate themselves, and everyone else.

People can have many reasons for wearing masks. Some people want a measure of security to protect themselves from the pain of rejection. Some may have confidence issues. And others still may just like a measure of privacy in their lives. There can be any combination of reasons as well, and most often, there are.

Simply because there are aspects of people's personal life that they don't care to share with others. I think we all wear a mask from time to time.
We may be in a situation that we want to feel more socially accepted - so we wear a mask to cover part's of true self in fear that it will expose us for what we are and we will therefore get rejected. And nobody really likes that feeling.

Beacuse they're afraid of what you'll find under the mask. If you'll accept them or if you'll just runaway.

Fear. Fear of something. If they can give up the fear, the need to hide goes away.
