It takes a terrible instance for an addict to change his/her life. I was married for 20 years to a man with a drug and alcohol addiction, although I didn't know about the drugs until just before I left. Over the years, he promised to stop drinking and only after he lost everything did he stop. If you attempt to come between the addict and his addiction, you will become the enemy and everything will be your fault. The best thing to do is to leave the situation and look deep inside yourself as to why you would want to stay in a marriage with an addict. Until that person is willing to make a change for himself/herself, nothing that you say or do will make a difference.

Because this is what addiction does to the person. If one could just walk away because they wanted to, it wouldn't be called an "addiction". Addiction changes the person - psychologcally and physiologically. It alters brain structure. In a sense, the addicted person is not the same person they were before.

Because the drug or alcohol of his choice is over powering them. They are afraid to live life without the drug. If my husband was to have an addiction problem I would tell him to either get help or get out.

addiction is a powerful thing, and when we depend on a drug to make us feel better, escape or help us function, it becomes the most important thing in life... more important than family, husbands, wives, etc.
you can do a search for narcotics anonymous and addiction for more information.

Because they lack strength to do so. I agree with box of rain, go to al-anon, I used to go for awhile when I was a teenager, and had an alcoholic parent.
