Simple, it's important because we think it is. That's the only reason anything is important. Money has no value by itself. If you're alone on a desert Island, all the money in the world isn't going to help you, but society as a whole believes it's important, so it is. We've put a value on it and everyone believes it's important, and so it becomes important. Now in an evolutionary sense, we probably value beauty because it often represents a more healthy specimen and healthy = reproductive success. Of course this only works on a societal level and not as much the individual level. Someone who has a perfect body and glowing skin could be infertile and someone with terrible acne and shaped like a pear could be very fertile. But if you look at a population of 10,000 people, the people who fit the mold better are going to be more fertile than those who are outside of that. Plus, I think human nature is to create unattainable goals. If you look at the ideal of female beauty throughout the years, this has definitely been the trend. A few hundred years ago, we viewed heavy women as the ideal when the general population was quite underweight and many people were starving. As the waistlines of the general population grew, the female ideal shrunk. As obesity reached epic proportions around 2000-2001, there was a dramatic slimdown in Hollywood. If you watched shows that spanned the late 90's to early 00's, you can see just about every actress dropped 10 or so pounds. Jennifer Aniston, Sarah Michelle Gellar, Julie Benz, Jennifer Connolly, Soleil Moon Frye. Actresses and models collectively shrunk. Now obviously beauty in terms of facial features has stayed fairly constant, but other things have changed with the times. It's like we compulsively create unattainable values. If we valued beauty as a society, wouldn't we have been happy when being overweight was easier? But it's like it's only valuable because not everyone can have it. So when things become too easy, we move the line until it's unattainable again. I think our obsession with beauty has something to do with this. We value it because it's unattainable for everyone.

When I read this, I process it as two people. As a mother, I wonder if as a child some of your other qualities were brought into focus for you. I tell my daughters that they are beauties (as they are), but I spend more time admiring their other qualities, the ones that can't be changed by time or incident. Beauty is to be admired, but it isn't very dependable. As just another woman, I wonder what you see when you walk away from the mirror. If you had a skinless goat as your avatar, most who've read the things you've written here would still see you as beautiful. I wonder if you see both your own tangible and intangible beauty. I hope so.

In the animal kingdom, the more colorful (beautiful) an animal is, the stronger their genes are perceived to be. Strong genes lead to strong progeny, which assures survival of the species. We have these instincts still and are therefore, at least in the beginning, we're attracted to those we perceive as beautiful. Thankfully, we've evolved beyond first appearances. Intelligence, kindness, good humor, and many other human traits become important once we get past the original attraction. So, although at first we "judge a book by its cover," most of us realize there's more to us than what we see at first glance.

Beauty is definitely not something to be thankful for but something to be admired and treasured. To whom are you going to thank the body that is YOURS?
A beautiful body with a beautiful mind makes a goddess.

well, we humans are much concerned with how things look; it's in our nature. and it's as if we have a built-in mechanism that judges physical beauty. we are simply and utterly attracted to some, not to others. why, who knows? is it in our DNA? doubt it. i guess physical beauty is more like a test. for each person, the body they have been given is sacred. inside and out. we must learn to judge others based on what they feel, like, think, and say, not by whether they tweez their eyebrows or not. i guess that maybe all physical appearance is is simply meant to teach us. we are all different on the outside, and we are all different on the inside. for some, physique is ultimate. to me, it's important, but no where near everything to be considered when forming a relationship.

Don't beat yourself over it...it's just physical beauty. It has a function as much as life has a purpose.

it is from evolution. it is used to attract the best mate for having offspring to acquire the best traits possible. this is what physical beauty is for intentionally. now there are many other factors taken into consideration such as personality and intelligence.

Love is not blind so physical appearance plays on that role to those confused guys who are not ready for commitment.... Physical appearance attracts those sorta guys to make them realize and understand love so I guess you could say its a gift....
