The best reason is because of the ACCURATE potrayal of war - as the horrors of war only make the heroics THAT much more meaningful ;););)

Depends on the movie, I say ;)

I mean, something like Borat... it's mindless stuff.

But war movies are often rated R, and they are full of all kinds of educational stuff. The Patriot is a really good one, and it goes along with a real person. (Though Hollywood bent the story a bit, of course.) However, it's very bloody and violent, so it has an R rating.

The Saw movies (though I hate them) focus on psychology and the survival instinct. How far would a person go to survive? True, the actors and actresses are in no real danger, but could you imagine someone that would something dramatic if it meant surviving? Also, what mental challenges do Jigsaw's puzzles present? Many involve things sentimental to a person being mocked or destroyed, or doing something morally wrong to escape death.

There are all sorts of interesting R movies out there that are beneficial and educational.

1) if it is historically accurate or depicts an historical event- JFK was a rated R movie but it was poinent.
2) if the movie's R rating are due to actual events or are they added for creative voice- Mugsy- R was needed, Boys of Brazil- R was not needed.
3) if students are studying a hard topic which a movie can help aid in the understanding-
4) if there is a creative idea being expressed in a movie which is essential and educational (Taxi Driver- is a page by page representation of the short story- Notes from the Underground)
5) If the R rating due to violence or sex, if violent events of war ect, then needed...a class doesn't need to have a lesson in Couliguila (Roman empire who had wild sex parties).
6) if something being represented in a movie that can be used as a lesson in either creative writing or thought-
Silence of the Lambs- was a great movie for symbolism, psychology, and criminal law.

Well I hope this helps you out!

Good luck

They should because:
- it'll proably teach you alot, because R-rated movies have alot of sex, drugs, etc...it will teach you and maybe show you more about these things. An example of an R-rated movie would be Alpha Dog, which has tons of drugs, violence, bad language, sex but the lesson is great and it teaches you soo much about everything. it's based on a true story as well.
- high school kids are much older and smarter and have seen many things. most things in R-rated movies have already been seen by high school students, and even middle school kids. its nothing we have not seen before so it shouldn't matter. you have already seen everything exposed and out in the open anyway. sex is an obvious thing, drugs are basically everywhere and also an obvious thing and language is EVERYWHERE. i dont know one kid who doesn't swear.
- there are also many historic movies, such as 300 that can teach you and show you about many battles countries had. (BUT DONT BE FOOLED. THE MOVIE 300 IS NOT ACCURATE. PERSIANS WERE NOT BLOOD-THIRSTY ANGRY ZOMBIE-MONSTERS. THEY WERE HUMAN-BEINGS.)
-violence is also an everyday thing now. there is so much, that we are used to it. maybe if they show movies with violence, it'll get people to see how bad things really are. although some movies have obvious fake violence, but still. it's nothing we dont know or havent seen before and we may learn from it

you have already been exposed to extreme violence via pg 13, the sex is obviously already been dealt with (since you have sex ed and pg 13 movies are loaded with sex jokes), and foul language abounds in youth today lol (i'm not an old fart no comments from the peanut gallery...i mean if i can jokingly call my friend a slutbag or a ***** and she doesn't get offended, language is no longer an issue)

films also can be dealing with historical things (like 300 as mentioned above) or could deal with a difficult topic (ie a Sybil-type movie being watched in a psych class)

to start you off ;)

If the R rated movie is pertinent to the subject then it helps illustrate a lesson or subject. I also saw Glory in h.s. as well as Platoon and American History X.

It helps give for instants for certain subjects like English and history.

Of course my parents had to sign until I turned 18

R rated movies can help kids realize the way things really are. movies pg-13 and under censor out things for appropriateness but may not expose the whole truth of a situation. R rated movies will show all the blood, pain involved with a situation.

In 9th grade we had to have parental permission to watch "Glory". A movie about slaves in the civil war. Awesome movie...I guess they did it because of violence and racism stuff. But everyone in America should see this movie. I hate war movies, but I loved it.
