Now that you mention it, I do see a lot of painted hinges, but I thought it was more because of a lazy painter. I don't think it is standard practice to paint door hinges. It can even interfere with the movement, and how can you keep the paint looking good when the hinge has to move all the time?

There are hinges that can be ordered to come with only a coat of primer for a finish. It would be common practise to paint these with a thin finish. These were special ordered and in my experience, rare. Most hinges I encounter have a finish which is identical to a lock or any other metal hardware for a door, they are never to be painted. Painting impedes function and servicing. A commercial door with a fire-rating, which has certificate plaques or stickers on the door edge and/or jamb, can never be covered by paint. To do so, would de-certify it. All hardware should be masked, removed or if your good enough;" cut in "around, never painted.

He is wrong!!! hinges are usually finished in a way that it protects them from rusting. There is no need to paint them, not ever!!!
He was just too lazy to mask them off to keep from getting paint on them.

Painted hinges is a pet peeve of mine and it is NOT standard practice ,sounds to me you like you hired an un-experienced and /or a lazy painter .You get what you pay for(please remember that when you hire your next contractor ) .
