I think that if you reply back nicely it would make them even more mad then not responding at all. If you reply back rudely like them it is only putting more fuel on the fire (more reason for them to keep fighting with you) so if you want to make them even more mad answer back with a remark that will embarrass them, be nice. Kill with kindness. It's more embarrassing that way.
Also embarrassment will usually keep them from responding back to you again.

I don't know which would irritate them more, but there is no way I could walk away without having the last word. ESPECIALLY if someone ticked me off.... :0)
