Although there is a huge range of salaries within each category, physicians (doctors) are the best paid on average. According to the government's Bureau of Labor Statistics, in 2004, I could find averages for Lawyers ($94,930) and Dentists ($129,920). They gave ranges for engineers and physicians. The range for Engineers was $43,679-$140,800 (with petroleum engineers paid the best), and for physicians it was $132-953-$321,686. Since the bottom of the physician range was higher than the top of the range for engineers, and since the mean was well above that for dentists and lawyers, they are the best paid.

Depends what kind of doctor, any specialty having to do with the heart and brain and high payers upwards of quarter mil a year. Dentists, not particularly, orthodontists, yes. Im not sure how much though. Lawyer, depends how well you do, you can make very little or tons. Im not sure about engineer. But if you are just doing these for the money, don't become a doctor, because it isnt right for you.

While doctors and lawyers tend to make more than dentists or engineers, choosing a career (and area of study) based on who makes the most money is a guaranteed path to being miserable.
Trust me. Don't do it. I knew way too many people in college who HATED what they were studying, but did so because they thought that was the only way to make good money.
In truth, you'll be much more successful (not to mention, happy) if you actually do something you LIKE and WANT TO DO. Becoming a doctor or lawyer, for instance, will take upwards of 10 years before you finish your studies, not to mention the hundreds of thousands of dollars you'll spend. That's a big investment of both time and money on something that you really don't like doing just because you think it'll magically make you money after graduation...

Unless you are a lawyer for the white house, I would have to say and engineer.
Especially a nuclear engineer.
