But then one day you overhear someone talking about your place and they're embarrassed for you because really, your place isn't that great and your skills are very basic?

I would like to commiserate with you but my cardboard box home was featured the August issue of "Greenest US Homes". I have a double-wide upright Kenmore box with rows of artificial flowers surrounding it.
