I have a hexagon shaped fish tank 55gal and it is to deep for florescent lighting. These mercury vapor bulbs dont require a ballist or something do they. Can I screw one into a regular ceramic light fixture. Also Im going to build a top for the aquarium myself Will this light create a lot of heat do I need to add venting slits and a computer fan to keep the air moving. If you know a lot about these bulbs tell me everything.
THANKS

Yes those do require ballest if memory serves me right. They do make a self ballest type bulb that looks alot like that. It was called a low pressure sodium bulb. We would use them to replace Mercury vapor bulbs when the ballest would go bad. Now I might have this backwards but reguardless the bulb you want should say self ballasted.

Since you didn't add a link to a specific product, I'd say to look at the information about the lamp before you buy. If the lamp says it has a mogul base, this is too large to fit into an normal (household) socket and would require a special fixture.
