I was curious what the average starting pay for teachers, and where can I find a site that lists teachers positions. I have tried monster.com and a few others, but it is hard to sort through all of the spam.

I am thinking of getting my degrees in history and political science. I am not sure which I would be best of getting a masters in though or how well off I would be getting the masters.

My starting salary my first year teaching was 28,000 in NC! (we don't pay teachers that much :( lol ) Most states pay more but I doubt you'll make more than 40,000 your first year. Here are some things I advise you to do. Depending on the state you are interested in, go to their state education website. For example, NC's website is www.ncpublicschools.org! Once you're there, search the Pay Schedule and there you should find a listing of pay scales for that state.

Secondly, having a higher degree has it's incentives. For example in my state if you get your Master's there is a 10% pay increase and if you get National Board Certification there is another 12% pay increase. Money can be made in teaching you just have to keep getting more education.

So to sum it up:
1.) Search the state education websites
2.) Find their pay scale
3.) You can also find state job listings there
4.) Keep getting your education so you can make more $$ :)

Good luck!!

teachers do not make alot of money, ever. thats is just the way it is. it sucks that the people directly affecting our childrens future get paid so little. most teachers get into it because they love teaching. the ones that just get into it b/c its an easier college major end of miserable or end up on the news sleeping with the students. so perhaps if pay is your main concern, go in a different direction. the teachers i know make between 35-40 after several years. and btw, that is not alot of money to live on....

I think its between 25-35k a year depending on where you live. In Maine (where I live) and many other states though, to be able to teach you need to be certified through a college program... if you don't get the required courses as an undergrad, you will need to get at least your MAT.
