The Japanese more than any other Asian power embraced western organization and technology, patricularly in military science. The Japanese home islands lack the natural resources needed for heavy industrialization and the population explosion they experienced in the early 1900s. They Japanese, like the European nations, needed colonies to exploit for their resources . Various metal ores, rubber, and petroleum were most needed. Japan had experts from germany drill her army, experts from Britian help build her navy, and established modern weapons factories based on western models. At the same time other asian powers like China and Korea were resisiting westernization and were unable to stop the modernized Japnese forces when they invaded. Japan defeated Russia badly in 1905, her only serious western threat. She had held Korea since 1910 as well, and invaded Northern china (manchuria ) in the 1930s. Starting in December of 1941, she swept across the Pacific in victory fevor, capturing the resource rich French Indochina colonies, the Dutch East Indies, British Malayia, and the American owned Phillipines.
