My mom says that if I don't, the food residue gets stuck in some sort of tube, which forces it to get clogged up, which forces us to call a plumber and pay big bucks.

I just scrape my food off, I don't rinse it totally clean. If you use a good dishwasher soap it should get cleaned. My favorite is Cascade Complete...

Rule #1: Mom is always right.
If Mom is wrong, see Rule #1!!! Always!!!

I don't bother rinsing the dishes that go into the dishwasher except if they have egg or milk on them. I use a soft rubber scraper and get most of the food off into the trash.

I do know people tho, who not only scrape the dishes, but wash and rinse them before putting them into the dishwasher!!!

BTW: Plumbers cost around $50 per hour and that is at the apprentice level!!! the master is outrageous!!!

Most modern dishwashers have built-in disposals, although they are not nearly as efficient as the ones in your sink. Small, soft food particles should be able to go through them without difficulty. If in doubt, check the owners manual.

Dishwasher detergents, the good ones, anyway, have enzymes that attack the residue left on dishes.

Basically, you should scrape off the large food particles and put the dishes into the dishwasher. If you will not wash them soon, put them through the rinse cycle. If you have only two or three dishes, rinse them at the sink. Save water.

Nevertheless, you must obey your mother. I read that in a book somewhere.

There is no need to pre-wash your dishes before placing them in the dishwasher. The washers made today will take care all you need to do is scrape them and place in the dishwasher. If I am not going to run at that time I will do a rinse and hold.Think of the water you will be saving both for your pocket and for the planet. According to a recent study you use 32% less water if you run a load of dishes instead of hand washing..

I do to make sure the dishes come out clean. Sometimes if you leave food on dishes the heat from the dishwasher will bake the food on and really make it hard to wash off.

You should scrape off as much as you can into the garbage. Then, give a quick rinse.
