"There has never been an antipathy between them, only the desire to surpass. France is the adversary of England as the better is the enemy of the good." - Victor Hugo
Individual French folk are fine, but as a nation we definitely get the impression they don't like us. If our wildlife sneezes, they block all imports and refuse to lift the bans long after others have done so. In the Falklands War, it was French exocet missiles that sank our ships. We remember this sort of thing.
Agincourt does still rankle - or so I've heard. Good!

France is more or less an isolated country. They donot have much relation with any other country other than minimum diplomatic contacts. There is not mich exposure of French culture and society.Even the relationship between France and UK is only diplomatic only. But there is no specific UK hate in France.

Probably envy...if the French feel they're being skanked, their government will know about it, whereas all we do in the UK is write to right-wing newspapers who pick out the 'sexiest' letters, but not before editing them almost beyond recognition. Viva la France!

Something to do with the battle of Agincourt and garlic I think.
The battle is where the famous 2 finger salute allegedly comes from, after the French promised to cut off the bow fingers of all English bowmen.
Things have kind of gone downhill from there

It probably started when they got the crap kicked out of them at Agincourt in 1415*.
Google 'French Military victories' and you'll end up at the link below..
* That's a year, not a time of day in case you're American and wondering...

Pug the mighty is wrong... the one finger salute came from the fact that CROSS BOWMEN used their middle fingers to trip the trigger on their CROSSBOWS... it was NOT the Longbowmen.
After they were threatened with having their trigger fingers cut off, they would fire a bolt on their crossbows then hold up their middle finger towards the enemy, showing they still had their finger... that one finger insult is still used by people driving on AmeriKans highways today.

Actually the Scots get on really well with the French, probably united by a mutual dislike of the English.
