What helped me was making a very detailed outline. Start with the broad subjects (on paper, not on computer). Then fill in 3-5 points under each broad topic. The act of writing out the outline helps you remember. Make cards with key vocabulary and dates as well.

The first thing to do would be establishing what type of learner you are. Are you an audio learner? Meaning, do you retain information better when you hear someone say it or when you repeat it out loud?

Are you a visual learner? Do you have to draw pictures and diagrams to help you understand the material?

Are you a kinesthetic learner? Maybe you have to write the information out over and over again till you remember.

After finding the method that works for you, it's important to disperse your studies over a period of time. To truly learn information, it must in long term memory which is why studying a little each day is better than cramming it into one day. Thats why when you cram, you're able to pour out all the info the next day but can rarely retain after the exam.

Do NOT read the book 3 times like the guy just said. Re-reading your textbook chapter before a test is a terrible idea. That's what notes are for.

Don't Panic! just stay calm.
Take all the Key Terms and review them.
Look in the front or end of each section of the book, it will usually sum up what the chapter is about.
Read over your notes, and remember if the teacher said anything about what was going to be on the test.
Call a friend and review with them, but remember not to gossip about unrelated things.
Research on the Internet.
I hope this will help you...Good Luck.

Read the damn book three times.
Memorize the notes.
Imagine sample questions, know the answers.
My sympathy! History is a lot of fun, except for history classes!
