Nearly 6,000 Sunni Arab residents joined a security pact with American forces Wednesday in what U.S. officers described as a critical step in plugging the remaining escape routes for extremists flushed from former strongholds.

So far as I expected. They down play the progress... ANY progress. You people do realize that this is a highly volitale area where trust of "westerners" is slim to none. Six Thousand is HUGE. And no... the whole village or city will not become policemen. Is your whole town or city policemen?

Thanks for the very much predictable downplay and spin.

g... why do democrats only focus on the negative. Typically in a volitale area when good is being introduced it threatens the bad. The bad escalate their efforts. This is predictable. See, good wins when it does not shrink. Others begin to see the benefits and they begin to hope and dream. There are typically many under the rule of a few and when the masses see the good and are encouraged by the good, then they fight for the good. Those numbers grow and beat down the bad. Yes, it starts with 6,000. You may even have a few frauds mixed in there... but the majority will get it and they will desire it. Do you not enjoy your freedom? Are there not millions here willing to die to protect it?

Shylock... lets make sure it is stable first... just because your toddler just learns to take his first steps, does not mean you introduce him to the stairs right away or to ice skating. We need to do the job right.

They wouldn't give bush credit if he solved world hunger. They hate him with a blinding passion.

I'm not left or right, but obviously this is a positive step. If the support can continue to grow in Iraq, leading to less casualties, clearly we will be in a better position where everyone will back U.S. presence in the Middle East.

I think that having Iraqis fight the militant extremists may sound like a good idea but I don’t know how good an idea it is long term to arm Sunni tribesman, considering the volatile sectarian situation. Some Shiites are not too happy about this.

About damn time those Iraqis showed some loyalty to our troops, it isn't much, but it is a start. This war is finally piecing together. We just have to hold out a little longer, and Iraq can deal with the terrorists themselves.

Nothing under the Bush administration can be considered a success. The liberal media would never allow that.

Yes, and I consider this to be great news. All those responsible for this are to be applauded.
Finally some Iraqis have put aside their differences to achieve a common goal of peace and independence.

Now if we could work on this type of bi-partisanship here, stop the lies and name calling, that would also be great.

I heard truces before in muslim countries. They don't last.
Sure we can hope for the best and I agree this is a good thing but we need to think soberly about the situation.
We are nation building, and setting up a socialized government while fighting socialism here.
A bit hypocritical?

Like seamus answered,They have a blind hatred for Bush,They will not acknowledge it mostly though, because they have already invested in defeat, and their backers like moveon.org will not allow them to, without using Clinton like tactics to defund and defraud/slander any person on their payroll of candidates and representatives

is it a good thing?

yes...

but, I've heard this song and dance before... how many "truces" have I heard of... yet more bombings?

I was reading a story just the other day about a commander talking about how he felt the U.S. truces with militant groups were falling apart and they weren't keeping their word...

it's one step forward and two back it seems...

why do conservatives ignore the fact that for every good thing they seem to bring to the table, 5 other things are falling apart in Iraq...
