All heat (or energy) absorbed on this planet starts with the Sun. So lets start with that. The temperature the sun burns at is not constant, instead, it's cyclical. Sometimes hotter, sometimes cooler.
You then have to factor in how much of this heat is is retained by the Earth's atmosphere. This efficiency also fluctuates.
After that, you have to determine how much impact does mankind have on the Earth's capacity to retain heat. This is the major point of contention between both schools of thought, where you get all the "My theory can beat up your theory" arguments.
Good luck sorting that part out.

Carbon dioxide, methane, etc traps solar energy, and causes warming.

Imagine a greenhouse. the glass panes allow the energy from the sun in. It is absorbed on the floor, ground, plants, air etc.
But the air is trapped in the greenhouse. So as the sun continue to shine more heat is trapped.
