A lot of good choices offered already, but I would add in something a little different: Boston Color Group in Watertown (between Newton and Boston).
Nicole - their stylist - is very creative, collaborative and affordable. It's a nice experience, a little different from the salon experiences already listed here and the sort of typical Newbury Street thing.
Parking is available, she keeps very flexible hours and the cut and color are really downtown quality. Highly recommended.

A lot of local celebs get their hair done there. In addition, the owner, Mario Russo also has his own line of hair care products which are great. Mario Russo Salon is also sells Kiehls products - a sign of an upscale salon.
