Just out of curiosity... I over heard someone telling my parents about breastfeeding mothers selling their milk to mothers who either couldn't or wouldn't pump or breast feed. Have you guys heard of this before and /or do you have any thoughts on this?

Generally milk for use of other infants is donated to milk banks (who sell it for either on a non-profit or for profit basis) or given away for free.

Some women sell their milk to adult with fetishes. Also some women make soap from breastmilk and sell that.

It's more common than you think that moms share their breastmilk. There are milk banks all over the country that allow women to donate milk. The milk is gently pastuerized and then distributed to babies who need it.

My thoughts? I'd rather have milk from a friend than feed my baby formula.

I don't know about "selling" it...I think that it's wrong to do so since a mother can breast feed herself (even adopted children) and with lots of work can even re-lactate should her milk dry up. And it makes no sense for a woman to pay for something she is simple too lazy to get out of her own breasts.

There are milk banks in North America & Canada that will take donated breast milk to give to sick children in hospitals etc. And I think that it's awesome that these children can have the benefits of breastmilk for free.

It simply doesn't make sense for someone to PAY for it if they are healthy and producing their own breast milk. As for selling it....I think that it's wrong to demand money for something that your body produces naturally...it doesn't cost you anything...why do you get to charge for it. It should be given with love.

I know some one who was selling extra milk.
It would probably be best to get breast milk from a close friend you trust, or from a doctor/hospitol that has a donation center.
I would only buy breast milk that was from some one that I trust completely.

I would do it in a heartbeat. There are some parents that are just unable to breastfeed for medical reasons or what not, and their babies deserve the best nutrition too =) I think it's wonderful that there are milk banks to provide this.

Ya, I heard of it. Some people would do anything to breastfed. Breast Milk is the best.

Sometimes babies can't drink anything else. And sometimes there are too many babies, and they all need breast milk (picture triplets).
I'd get in touch with LaLeche league if you're interested.

I dunno, maybe I am too paranoid for something like that.. but how could you make sure that the milk you were getting for your baby wasn't full of drugs or alcohol or full of mercury or lord knows what else.... Trust me, I'm all for breastfeeding, I am currently breastfeeding my 5 month old... however like I said, I may be too paranoid of a person for something like that. :P

Milk banks. Fine with me. Wish people would consider this over formula.

Yep. Baring the donor has severe health problems or drug use that can affect the milk, it is healthier than formula.
