It sounds like you are developing a nail fungus. Symptoms are:
Nails get brittle and develop ridges or even crack or split down the nail. Nails will break off because they are brittle or crumbly. There are topical applications that will help. Lamasil can be taken orally(prescription)and takes a few weeks/months to cure. Untreated you can lose your nails or end up with unsightly, discolored "stuff" in place of your nails Generally, the toenails are also affected. I have suffered from this problem, too. I waited too long for treatment, and now my toenails are permanently messed up, and my fingernails, particularly my thumbnails, are showing the symptoms, also.
So far as the wrist is concerned...if you type a lot or use a computer a lot or have a job that requires a lot of hand/wrist flexing, you could be experiencing "Carpel tunnel syndrome" I would get it checked as advanced cases of CTS require surgery. Good Luck!

There can be general health issues that show up in your nails. Go to Md before assuming its just fungus ect.
