Im pretty sure Alex Smith is a bust, and Dilfer is no spring chicken... do we draft yet another unknown, stick with smith, or try to pick up a free agent (if there is one worth getting)

No...I don't think we can. I also think we are a team like the Dolphind, that will not settle for an "OK" QB. After Montana and Young, we know what the best look like, and we expect it.

I would prefer not to depend on the draft.....(After all.....that is how we got Alex Smith). Personally I think they should get a real O Coordinator, and focus on the O-line during the draft. And Make a big juicy offer to Derek Anderson. He has shown what he can do if he is given a little protection......and unlike a draft pick, he isn't a question mark. Bring in a quality Wideout in free agency also....so that Battles has some help. He shows flashes of brilliance...and I think if he got a decent QB lobbing the rock to him, he would become a good receiver.

*Of course, what the Niner fans really need is Mrs York out of the front office, and Eddie Debartalo back in. York is an idiot.

Smith does look a lot like a bust at this point. I think the 49ers need a backup plan.

Obviously, the 9ers have two main options.

1) Trade for a QB. I think the most intriguing trade option is Brady Quinn. Since Derek Anderson is suddenly looking like one of the best QBs in the NFL for the Browns, Quinn is probably available. Quinn has the opposite background from Smith (Quinn comes from a major college program and a pro-style college offense, while Smith comes from a small program with a weird offense), which is probably comforting for 9er fans. The 9ers might also consider checking to see whether Aaron Rodgers is available.

2) Draft someone. There are a lot of solid QB options in this draft, which is good, since the 9ers don't have a 1st round pick (traded to the Patriots). Guys like Graham Harrell (Texas Tech), and Colt Brennan (Hawaii) could be available when the 9ers pick in the 2nd round, and Josh Johnson (great small school prospect out of San Diego) might be worth picking late in the draft.

The Niners will never make it far with Alex, now or in the future. If he was going to be the next Montana or Young we would have seen some flashes of brilliance by now. And I don't think the team has any expectations that Dilfer is their man, they just signed him to have a capable back-up.

Time to pick up afree agent, preferably a young one. Maybe a guy who's serving as a back-up now but has the skills. Like they did with Young.

There are a lot of good QBs coming out this year, and San Fran could pick up a really good one, even as late as the second round. Also, Cleveland will get rid of either brady quinn or Derek Anderson, so there is a chance for one of them. I don't think Smith is the answer, but they have a lot of holes to fill. Personally I would take a chance on some younger QBs with later picks, but try and get my O line and running game in place while he develops.

It's hard to put all of the Niners' offensive woes on Alex Smith. OK, he might be missing some open receivers, but it isn't like he's getting all the time in the world to throw....the offensive line needs time to gel as well. Frank Gore had a good week last week, but up until then, his season has been somewhat of a bust as well. With SF's-style of offense, it's hard to be successful if the running game isn't working either.

OMG That guy up there said McNabb... holy **** i would hate to see him in The City... I dont know... Alex smith doesnt impress me even a little bit, I think he is digressing and i dont think he has what it takes to be a leader...

BUT, the 9ers arent getting rid of him... with that being said, they need to get some SERIOUS work done on the O-line, thats the only chance Smith has at being a good QB for the niners

Until that franchise shows some form of stability no matter who the qb is he will be a bust for the 49ers.

There have been far too many personnel changes there over the past four years. And you can't win without stability.

49ers will last all the way to the draft day, top 5 pick again....trade it to get more 1-2nd rounders, pay a "proven free agent"

drafting a quarterback means that you are delaying your program for 3-4 more years!!!

I say Alex is a major bust, do ANYTHING we have to to get another QB, the Pats have our 1st round pick so we may have to go looking for a free agent............

Smith may not be a bust with Pittsburg, or a team that can with without a great quarterback (though Roethlisberger is great), but with San Francisco, maybe they could build their team differently. I predict that they will not win with him.
