A reference book is a book in which you look up pieces of information. A dictionary, in which you look up the meanings of words, is one example. A thesaurus, in which you look up synonyms, is another. Other important reference books include encyclopedias, in which you look up short articles on a variety of subjects; "Bartlett's Familiar Quotations," in which you look up significant things said by famous writers and speakers; and concordances, which help you locate passages in the Bible, in Shakespeare's plays, and in other important writings.
An anthology is a collection of works by many different writers. For example, a poetry anthology contains samples from the work of many different poets. A fiction anthology contains short stories or novel excerpts by many different authors.
