my main computer (i'm on a laptop typing this) has got problems. it was fine yesterday, then today the keyboard stopped working, so i tried another, and another. all of which wouldn't work. none of their lights lit up although you could turn num lock on and off on one. they are all ps/2 input. there was no key board listed in device manager. my mouse was fine as it's usb so i thought it might be a problem with the ps/2 port.

then i decided to try restarting the computer to see if the computer would recognise a keyboard then... the usual dos looking screen/s came up and then black, nothing but black. no sound... nothing.

we checked the dvd rom drives for disks... none. and now we're stuck...
any ideas?

uhm... try a usb keyboard. I had the same problem.

sounds like a bios problem......

when you boot the computer

hit either (tapping all at once) the f1 f2 f11 f12 keys or the del key.

one of these will get you into the bios.

see if all your disks show up in the bios.

reseting defaults might help.

if that doesn't work,
set bios to boot of the cd first (if it doesn't already)
insert the windows xp cd.
reboot....... choose to repair windows.
you should get a dos prompt (this is actually dos, not the other screen you claimed to see, that was bios loading itself and your computer)(dos loads after words.)
type chkdsk /r
and hit enter. this will take a while, but should fix any disk volume issues. its harmless to your data and you won't loose anything.....
when its done, type exit and reboot without that cd in the drive....

good luck........... the more info you can see on the screen the better.... usually there is either beeps coming from the computer or text explaining the problem on the screen.

Your motherboard is broken and you need a new one. Yes your USB mouse works becuase the USB port is not broken but your keyboard port is.
