It's 4 cylinder standard. My husband can force it into reverse but i have more difficulty. I want to have some kind of idea of what's going on so when we take it in I don't get scammed! Let me know if you need more info.

sounds like you just have a binding of sticking shift mechanism or cable,it would be under the shift boot,going through the floor.
it probably needs some cleaning and lubrication

Not sure how many miles are on it, but your clutch may be showing some wear. 1st and reverse are the first to show difficulty. I believe that you have a hydaulic clutch, check the fluid. Is it low? If it is cable, does it need adjustment?

Worse case scenario that I see, is cluctch replacement.

Best thing to do with that heap of junk is to drive it to the nearest car crusher -- It does exactly what it says on the tin

tyranny is on the way out , try putting it in first gear then do to reverse if that works then it's the syncromesh out of whack

there is something wrong with the gear shaft take it to your nearest gm goodwrench
