(hint: Constitutional Republic . . . the reason politicians refer to it as a democracy is because they run the INCORPORATED government, which runs as a democracy in the phoney capitol of D.C., not the seat of our republic which was Philadelphia)

The US is an Oligarchy, some say a "corporate republic" & only occasionally has had periods of Democractic rule. Some framers of the Constitution had in mind a "Constitutional Democratic Rebublic," while others did not trust the masses to run the country. The constitution was mainly to prevent any branch of government from siezing power. The swing to a powerful oligarchy may have began when Reagan was elected, but definately accellerated with the passage of NAFTA during the Clinton presidency.
One need only look at the electoral college to understand how little the framers of the constitution trusted the masses to make informed decisions. Because the internet tends to rapidly disperse information & cannot easily be controlled by powerful interest groups, we may be swinging back to a more democratic form of oligarchy.
