Television was invented by and for people who can read, for people who do have other things to do, for people who needed more visual information -- and not because anyone was bored. You need not worry about the sarcastic answers - it's the answers of little or no substance that are the problem here.

I think the road to the invention of the television was already paved by invention after invention of visual information in the last 1500 years - and like the Internet - what was needed was a way to transport that information farther, faster, and in an easier way.

Just another step on the road of technology. To provide information in a timely fashion to the masses. (and Captain Kangaroo to me.)
I can't imagine the inventors ever even considered the negative effects it would result in.

for entertainment of course..
but the main point was to make HUGE profits from this brand new elerctronical miracle
same reason why anything in this world is invented(CDs, LCD screens, DVDs and all other things that will come soon)
To make profits for the people who invented these things!
