I think if used correctly, it is a joke no matter how deep you are in the relationship.

I don't think there is anything wrong with that. If you have been in a long term relationship and are planning to marry your significant other, then there is nothing wrong with calling them hubby or wifey. When my boyfriend talks to his friend or anyone he calls me "the wife" or "wifey" and I love it because I know we'll get married one day.

I would find it rude in public, but in private I joke like that with my husband. Been married 4 years.
