It is because those teams were superior to the Patriots at that time (1985 Bears & 1996 Packers).
The Patriots played the NFC north last year and they crushed all of them.
This year only the Packers would be able to compete with New England and rest would get crushed.
So your theory doesn't hold much water.

No Pats fan but the loss to Bears was over 20 years ago & the Packers was awhile back too but I am pulling for a Steelers vs Packers Super Bowl.

Well it is a tougher division but neither of those teams is a better than the Pats now. Plain and simple, they had better teams those years (85-86, 96-97). That's why the Pats lost.
