Here are two sites where you can begin your research:
Slavery economics
http://cghs.dadeschools.net/slavery/antebellum_slavery/economics/beginnings.htm
Immigration economics
http://www.whitehouse.gov/cea/cea_immigration_062007.html
And, contrary to the above poster, you CAN compare the two.
Edit: I fear that some people answering this question don't understand the ACADEMIC usage of "compare" -- that's too bad. To COMPARE doesn't mean you have to find them similar -- it means you go through the process. It's too bad I really have to explain this.

Only a far left wing liberal teacher could even conceive of asking such a stupid question.
Slavery in the USA has no comparison to the present immigration policy of the United States because, #1. nobody has enforced the immigration policy for the past 30 years, which is why we have a problem with illegal immigration in the first place. #2. Slavery was once mandated by law. Nobody enforces current immigration policy. #3. Nobody asked for illegals to jump a fence to come here in the first place, and nobody is forcing them to stay here.

first off: unless these same immigrants are working in sweatshops this is NOT the same as slavery. even if it is, they can still leave and the abuse ends when they punch out. they can also leave. if a slave tried leaving the plantation they were beaten bad enough to make the whippings jesus got seem like a tickling. slaves were also considered property. immigrants have control over their lives and can actually get legal assistance.slaves ( white AND black) had 24/7 living hell.
immigrants get paid and benefits and ID. they don't even have to learn english. slaves got JACK and didn't even have their own lives as someone illegally here can still do.
since slaves didn't even get paid and illegals do HOW do you even compare? to say immigrants are at the same level as slaves is ignorant and INSULTING. between the two I'd be an illegal ANYDAY.

Its not comparable, slaves were forced from their homes, immigrants choose to come here out of their own will, and at that illegally, by sneaking in.

You cannot. Slavery was actually physically making someone do work. Immigration issue its closing our borders and not forcing anyone to do work.

That question comes from a Kool-Aid drinking teacher.
There is no comparison.
