You pretty much can't buy a decent unit for less than $75 any more. I've been repairing vac's for over 35 years and the new generation of all plastic, bagless machines are all a bunch of crap. You can buy a decent Panasonic, maybe a Sanyo from some vac. stores, not (Wal-Mart or Meijer, or K-Mart), a decent vac. store, for around $150, and that's going to be low end model. Last year the top ten most efficent, best buys for the money vac's. in Consumer Reports all had bags. Anything you buy from the large dept. stores will have to taken somewhere else for service, if it needs it, as none of them maintain a service dept. for appliances. If you're interested in buying something that will likely last you the rest of your life, with normal maintainance, then find someone who reconditions, rebuilds some of the older models that were still manufactured out of steel with some plastic for bumpers, Electrolux, Kirby, Tri-Star, Filter Queen.

I would go to consumerreports.com and look up vacuums and see what they say.
