The first click is always a lucky guess. Then, if you haven't hit a mine, you use the numbers given to figure out if there are mines near a certain block. The number tells you how many mines are in the surrounding 8 blocks. Using logic and deduction, you can easily figure out most of the board. Sometimes there are questionable areas where you'll have to really guess and hope you get lucky. But all in all, the game is mostly solved by using your brain.
I usually start a game in the four corners. If a sizable chunk gets cleared out, I can usually go from there quite easily. Then I look for blocks I can single out. If you right-click a block that you determined has a mine on it, then that will "flag" that block so you know to avoid it and use it in further figuring out the other blocks. The idea of the game is to click all the blocks that DON'T have mines. When all the mines are the only things left on the field, then you win.

1) Your first click, wherever it may be, will never be a mine. After that, all mines are placed. So be careful! 2) The first few clicks will often have to be random, because there is no way to know where the mines are yet. 3) Click randomly until you get a large open space revealed. 4) Then use logic to mark all mines on the board. Keep in mind that every number MUST have that many mines next to it. So if you run into a situation such as this: 0 1 [_] 0 1 [_] 0 1 [_] assuming this is only a 3x3 grid with 1 bomb total, 0's are blank spaces, and [_] are undecided spaces. A bomb cannot be on the top right because that would leave the 1 on the bottom with no bomb. Sometimes you have a 50/50 chance to get it right. Such is the case in the next diagram. * 3 1 * [_][_] * 3 1 Assuming this is only a 3x3 grid with 4 bombs total, and * are bombs for sure. Much of the board can be figured out by logical reasoning, however it does require a bit of luck sometimes. Hope this helps! =)

the numbers in the boxes are how many mines there are surrounding it. So click a couple times in different places to start with, then use some logic on where the mines are! for example, if there is a 2 in the box, there are 2 mines in the 8 surrounding boxes

You can figure it out by using logic almost all of the time. There are times that it will boil down to a guess. The trick in those situations is to make the best guess and figure out which area has the least bomb density. It would be hard to explain without having the game going on in front of us.

The number doesn't just denote how many mines are around it, it tells you how many are actually touching it. That could be on each side, top or bottom or to the corners of that particular square.

yes, the numbers around each square you click tell you how many mines are around them
eg a 4 appears that means around that number there are 4 mines
