my printer is a deskjet 3940. it only has usbports to connect into the computer.

Okay, so it's connected, and how did you setup the printer on the PC? Does it appear in the Control Panel / Printers? Does it print a test page? Does the self-test on the printer do a test page? Details! Details!

Usually you must install the software *before* connecting the printer to the USB port.

Also, did you install the HP driver software? and follow the instructions.

Lasty are you sure the model number of the printer is a deskjet 3490. A search on www.HP.com comes up with a laptop?

With USB printers you need to follow the instructions to the letter, you can not hook the printer up until the computer tells you too. So go to ad remove programs and uninstall your printer and unconnect it and start all over, then check under start/settings/printer/ and make sure that printer is your default printer and also that work off line is not checked.
