Maybe 3 -5 years an American girl (either a student or backpacker) was caught with drugs in her backpack in an Asian country. She denied they were hers but she was sentecned to death anyway. Does anyone remember her name or what happened?

There have been several such cases. I don't know of any case in which the death penalty was ever actually carried out on an American girl, but there have been several sentenced.
I've attached a link to an Australian article about the situation many Aussies have found themselves in - the law would be exactly the same for Americans in the same situations. There's just more Aussies in these cases because they travel more than Americans, and SE Asia is closer to their backyard.

This is why Asia is able to take over the world. Thet don't play childish games with losers- Thus they are very disciplined people. I ask did they have a whole generation that abused illegal drugs heavily, as if that wasn't enough they had no respect for their parents! Now the a holes expect their children to respect them (who doesn't want their cake and eat it to, but it's not that way at least not on earth

I didn't hear that one.
But in the same period, an Australian woman, was found to have herion in her luggage coming into Singapore, which has a sentence of death for that.
There's another Aussie woman whose luggage was used to by a baggage handler drug smuggling ring to ship marijuana into Bali, who received a 20 year sentence.

I don't remember a story about an American.
But Singapore did execute ad Australian man a couple years ago for drugs.
