Ok im only 14 so I will answer as best as I can
There are different types on the food chain and I believe mold is last or second to last... but I think it decomposes what they grow on...sort of like fungi....

The role of fungi (moulds, yeasts, slimes, mushrooms, etc.) in the cycle of life is to decompose organic matter and turn it back into carbon. They are sort of nature's recycling agent. The fungal cell is the second oldest organism on earth (the first is the viral cell).

If you want to know what functions it performs while fulfilling those goals: Mainly, molds break down dead material, consuming some of the energy for themselves, and decomposing the material to be accessible for other organisms as food.
