This is a rental house the Gas Co. said has a major leak from the meter to under the house but we changed out all pipes. They came back & said the same thing. Checked everywhere...found a gash in the pipe coming from the meter location into the ground, about 6 inches before going into the ground. The Gas Co. didnt look for the leak or even try to, they just said there is one and they dont do the work. My question is would a leak in that location lead them to believe its an under the house problem? Also, can that short piece of pipe be replaced or do I have to replace the whole pipe to the sidewalk and am I responsible or the Gas Co.? The gas is off at the house. Thanks for any replys.

Generally the Gas company is responsible for the line from the street to the Meter. After the meter is your responsibility (Actually the owner of the house). They will not check for or fix any leaks that are between the meter and the house.

A leak in that location would have them believe it is a house problem since it is after the meter. A short piece can be spliced in if there is enough room to work it.

If it is a line after to meter going to the street, they should be responsible and they should notice the leak.... If it is before the meter, they would want to fix it becasue you would not be paying for the gas (the meter wouldnt pick it up)

From the street to the meter is the gas companies responsablitly, from the meter to the house is the owners. If the leak is from the street to the meter and the gas company won't do anything about it, then call the fire department and tell them that you smell gas outside. They will call the gas company and they will HAVE to do something about it.

Id like to say the same as everyone else. It is the gas co. responsibility to get gas to the meter, UNLESS someone dug and broke the line. Then they come fix it and charge you.

This is almost certainly the responsibility of the owner of the house, but check your lease to make sure there isn't a clause that puts the onus on you. The owner should make repairs promptly. If not, hire a mean lawyer.
