You have had some very good answers, here is what I know. I have 2 kids ages 3 and 2. They love our small local zoo, it takes less then an hour to see everything, also some one said else said the pet store, i agree my kids love the pet store especially if they have kittens and puppies(petco does not.) A lot of people have said the park and yes my kids love playgrounds! Another one that they have a lot of fun at is an Aquarium we have a good aquarium close by and they loved it. We went to Sea world and they had a blast and they do remember, someone on here said they wouldn't remember anything so don't pay, I am sorry but we went to sea world like 6 months ago and my older daughter stills talks about shamu. They love looking at pictures from these outings so take a camera. I got to say that we love taking them places that are fun and interactive and fascinating to them, but they are usually happy doing simple outings too. Have fun ;)

If you have any local small businesses that make something that your child likes to eat or play with, see if they give tours and take them there. I took my small nephews to a local dairy farm where they give you a tour to show how milk comes from the cows and then can be made into cheese and ice cream. They also have a deli and store there that serves free milk, chocolate, 2% and whole on tap. They thought that all the chocolate milk they could drink was awesome.

The zoo is also a great place to take smaller kids, especially if they have a petting area. An aquarium is a cool place as well, but try to limit how long you stay, the smaller ones get bored much easier too.

If your local library does a story hour, or an arts and crafts station for kids, they enjoy those kinds of things too. They get to meet other kids there as well. Most libraries now days realize that the kids section needs to be more lenient with the quiet policy, and some have play areas.

Hope this gives you some ideas, have fun.

To the Land of Imagination and Creativity, no matter the activity and check out http:///www.parents.com:

Under Toddler read "Make Errands and Outings Fun by Susan Brody...
For a toddler, a simple errand can provide an exhilarating glimpse of the big, wide world. Read these pages in this story:
A Chance to Learn Every Day
Train Tracks and Hard Hats
Animal Attractions
Do-It-Yourself Kids
Nurturing Nature

For 2-year-olds, even a minor foray into the wider world is an eye-opener. "Just by sharing your everyday activities, like going to the store, you will help your child develop a greater understanding of how the world works," says Claire Lerner, a child-development specialist at Zero To Three, a Washington, D.C., nonprofit that promotes healthy development in the early years.

Though it's a good idea to give your child a broad range of experiences, don't feel compelled to take her to museums, theme parks, or circuses -- all of which a 2-year-old is probably too young to appreciate. Instead, set your sights closer to home, tapping into her interests and building on them. With a child this age, of course, you rarely know which activities she'll love until you try them. Here are some suggestions..."

Have fun!

Go to borders and get a book on the flora and Fawnia in your area then take them out on a nature trail and have them look for stuff and see if they can find stuff in the book by pictures.

Take them to the library. Take them to a park and just turn them loose with a soccer ball and sit back and watch them runn all day long.

Does not do much good this time of the year but go to walmart and get them each a fishing poll now take them fishing. No one need anything fancy just some hotdogs and hooks and a few bobbers. You will have have tons-o-fun.

Kids cant leave with out the parents and when you enter you have to say how many kids you are with and when you aleave they check how many you have. And if its your birthday you get a free huge bag of cotten candy a ballon and a card lol

My daughter is three and she gets so excited just going to the stores to see the toy section! Our favorite thing to do is visit the animal shelter and get the animals out to give them some attention, or you can visit a pet store too.We of course love the park but it's not the right weather for that anymore. We love Chuck E cheese and any kid friendly playland(even burger king has really fun play areas my 3 yr. old loves:) A zoo would be lots of fun. I plan on taking my daughter sometime soon, bummed we haven't done it yet.The library has lots of fun things to do and they also have story times for different ages at different times to fit your schedule.Hope this helps:)

You've gotten great answers already, I just want to add one thing:

Kids this age don't know a lot about the world. Anywhere you take them and anything you show to/say to them that is positive or at least not negative works. The kids may not remember the details, but they will silently develop the self-confidence and sense of security that comes with being loved and cared for. They will have memory flashes that will include you showing them things, teaching them how to learn, lifting them up to see things, making sure they don't trip, and picking them up if they do.

So if your budget is limited, I would say to take them SOMEWHERE and spend time with them (where the focus is on you being with them) EVERY week..as many times a week as you can.

Wow - you've got a ton of answers here, but it all boils down to where you are, the demeanor of your kids and yourself when you are in public. I have twins who are four now and we do alot of field trips.

I have some websites I check out to see what is going on, plus I join the mailing lists of any museums or cultural things in town so I know if there are any children's events.

Additionally, check the library or community center for events and a local Parents publication that would have events that you might not find on the web.

I'm attaching some sites below you might find useful. If I go someplace alot, I get a membership so that it saves us money.

Also -- check your local movie theatres -- REGAL has free children's movies in the summertime, which are great training ground for little kids to learn how to sit in a movie and behave themselves.

I'm not big on the regular kids things like fast food play grounds and Chuck E Cheese b/c kids are more likely to get sick when they go there.
