I was asked to solve this pair of simultanious equations using the substitution method:

2x+y=9
x-2y=7

This is what i did:

Rearrange x-2y=7 to make y the subject:
-2y=7-x
Y=3.5-0.5x

Sub in y:
2x+3.5-0.5x=9
1.5x+3.5=9
1.5x=5.5
X=3 2/3

Sub in x:
3 2/3 -2y=7
-2y=3 1/3
y=1 5/6

Am I right?

Nope :(

2x+y=9
x-2y=7

2y = x - 7
y = x/2 - 7/2

2x + (x/2 - 7/2) = 9
5x/2 - 7/2 = 9
5x - 7 = 18
5x = 25
x = 5

y = x/2 - 7/2
y = 5/2 - 7/2
y = -2/2
y = -1

CHECK:

2x + y = 2(5) + (-1) = 9
x - 2y = 5 - 2(-1) = 5 + 2 = 7

problem 1) when solving for y in -2y=7-x, you forgot to divide the negative, also when solving -2y=3 1/3.

My suggestions: solve for y in 2x+y=9, less division and less fractions.

Avoiding fractions whenever possible helps make fewer mistakes.

2x+y=9
x-2y=7 =>x=7+2y
2(7+2y)+y=9

14+4y+y=9
x=7+2y

14+5y=9
x=7+2y

5y=9-14
x=7+2y

5y=-5
x=7+2y

y= -1
x=7+2(-1)

y= -1
x=5

this is the most "elegant" solution using the substitution method

-2y = 10 / 3,
multiply through by -1,
2y = - 10 / 3,
y = - 5 / 3.

2x+4y=14
2x+y=9

3y = 5

y=5/3

when you divided by -2 to find y, it should be
y= neg 3.5 plus .5x
