i have a 1998 chevy malibu and the gas needle is under the peg so i never know how much gas i have, what caused this and how can i fix it? thanks to anyone that can help.

Sounds like the sending unit in the gas tank. If you replaced the fuel pump, you probably bumped the float so it isn't reading.

in order to fix that you will probably have to take the front plastic shield off the dash in order to reach the gauge and then very gently move the needle back to the proper side of the peg. i do not recommend that you do this yourself unless you have some mechanical knowledge. this may or may not solve the problem but it is a simple place to start

Sounds like there is a fuel tank transmitter problem. The only way to correct that is to replace the transmitter.
