I am taking a modern/contemporary dance class in January. I'm starting in the beginning class, but I'd like to know what exercises & stretches I can do now to get prepared. Thanks!

Contact the dance school, and ask them.

First do normal physical exercises. This is not only shaping your body or structure also makes you to move your hands and legs and other parts in a easy and proper way. Dance is nothing but shaking or moving your hands and legs and other parts in a beautiful and equal manner according to the music. If you add meaning in your movements, it will become greater. I mean moving the hands and other parts expressing the meaning of the words in the song. I think this hint will be useful to you.

well flexibity is needed to dance so make sure you just bend in different ways! splitz, bend backward, and you have to be able to move ur waist. So just turn on some jams and try to move what you got and trust me this is hard to do without moving anything else in your body.
