Heres a question, say i get a gift, and i don't know where the person who gave it to me got it from. and i don't want to ask them because it would look rude.

now i really don't like the present, i have not use for it. so i'd like to return it, but obviously i won't have the reciept.

if i know they sell the same item at Target, and i THINK that is where they got it from (but not 100% sure) could i go in, tell them i don't have the reciept, and still be able to return it?

or because i don't have the reciept, i wouldn't be able to? would i atleast get store credit or something? is there anyway i could get it like as in a gift card?

what are my options for returning something without a reciept

You can give it a shot, the worst thing they can do is refuse to accept it back. Usually if they scan it and it shows in their system they can take it back. However, you will only get a store credit, not a gift card, and certainly not cash.

I have paid cash for items at Target and with no receipt have been able to return them. From what I understand you are limited to 2 returns per year with no receipt on cash-paid items. They take your drivers license number and keep track of it that way. I actually exceeded that limit last year and took my mom with me on a return so she could use her license. They only issue in-store-credit, but it's better that being stuck with a vacuum you don't want. Ask to speak to a manager, maybe the store clerk is just misinformed. Also, maybe because it was purchased 5 months ago, they couldn't accept a return. If you have all of the original packaging and the item is in perfect condition, since there is no proof of purchase date, I would try to return it again for in store credit with your drivers license and maybe say you just bought it, or that you received it as a gift. If that doesn't work, you could always sell it on ebay, at least re coop some of your money. Good luck!

If you don't have a reciept and Target carries it then they will give you a store credit. If it is an electronic device or a computer game, it cannot be opened or they won't take it back-they will only exchange it for an identical item.

Walmart will also take merchandise back without a receipt. I can't remember if they will pay cash or only do a store credit/gift card.

Last Christmas I received a music cd that I did not want. I had no idea where it came from. I had no receipt.

I went to a Walmart returns area and said " I would like to exchange this, or get store credit, or get cash back, or something." I did NOT say that I did not have a receipt.
The Walmart employee took the cd, scanned it with their scanner. The amount of the cd, which was around $ 12.50 or so, came up on the regiser.
The Walmart employee counted out that amount of cash and gave it to me.

if it is an item that they know they sell exclusively (Mossimo, etc.) at Target then they will take it without a receipt. Does it still have a tag? I'm not sure your friends got it from Target because Target gives gift receipts with EVERY purchase....

I know positively that if Walmart sells the item, they will take it without a receipt, no questions asked!

good luck
