Hi,

Without a question. Major League Baseball will always be the national pastime, but in terms of popularity, pro football is the big dog on the block.

I found an article from Harris Interactive that explains "one-third (33%) of U.S. adults who follow at least one sport" say that football is their favorite sport. Baseball clocks in at 14%.

The article goes on to explain: "Since 1985, professional football has risen nine points in popularity (from 24% to 33%), while baseball has dropped the same amount (23% to 14%)."
All the figures were taken from a survey of 1,961 U.S. adults.

Will the Barry Bonds steroid scandal push baseball's popularity down even further? Stay tuned.

Mike

It has (unfortunately) and here is why:

1) Football (NFL) teams only play once per week. Not 162 times over a 6 month period.

2) The majority of the players are American.

3) The leadership at the role of Commissioner: Paul Tagliabu and now Roger Goddell have not let their respect sport spiral out of control like Bud Selig with Steroids, HGH, and performance enhancing drugs.

4) There is actually a salary cap in football which doesn't let a team like....say...the Yankees buy whoever they damn well please. Each team has a respective amount of money they are able to spend. Teams in baseball with less money can never contend because the large markets teams dominate all the free agent signings.

5) College- There is no college baseball following at all in America. College football dominates every Saturday through Fall.

6) The Draft: The NFL draft is an all-day event. The MLB draft never even gets mentioned.

7) Fantasy football. Enough said.

8) Player/Team jerseys in football are less expensive.

I think so. that whole baseball is our national past time is more marketing then any thing else. Americans love baseball, but with 162 games in the regular season, even the most die hard fans tend to burn out. Football has a 16 game season, so each game won or lost is equivalent to a ten game winning or losing streak. That makes the games much more important. All sports strike, and cheat their game, so I don't believe that has anything to do with it, but as you pointed out in another question, the media is tougher on baseball then other sports. If baseball wasn't as popular as it is, the media would ignore it, so there is still hope for baseball to retake the most popular sport in America trophy again.

I wish not, but it has since the 90's, because all those drunk guys love NFL, but i have to admit baseball can be boring on the 12 foul at bats, but i still like baseball much more

Yes. A long time ago and by a very wide margin. The biggest reason is that the NFL works on ways to please their fans, while baseball, with its billionaire owners and it's multi-millionaire players don't give two honks about it's fans. Both divisional series and the NLC were on cable TV. Idiotic.

Football has been the most popular sport in the US for over thirty years.

There's no accounting for taste.
